1st International Symposium on Approaches to the Problem of Elder Abuse and Neglect from a Gerontological Perspective

The “1st International Symposium on Approaches to the Problem of Elder Abuse and Neglect from a Gerontological Perspective” hosted by the Gerontology Department of our University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, organized within the scope of June 15 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, has ended.

The opening speeches of the symposium, which started online, were made by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Işıl Kalaycı, Head of the Gerontology Department and Turkey Representative of The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), Prof. Dr. İsmail Tufan, Head of the Gerontology Department of Akdeniz University and Turkey Representative of INPEA, and Susan B. Somers, President of INPEA.

Mala Kapur Shankardass (INPEA Asia Representative) in India, Lia Susanna Daichman (INPEA Representative) in Argentina, and Basit Ali Haidari in Saudi Arabia drew attention to the problem of elder abuse and neglect and offered solutions.

In the second session moderated by Nilüfer Korkmaz Yaylagül, Dr. Sevinç Sütlü addressed the issue of elder abuse and neglect from a gender perspective, while Dr. Ayşe Tekin addressed the issue of elder abuse and neglect from a feminist perspective.  Dr. Deniz Say Şahin addressed how elder abuse and neglect should be assessed, and Dr. Fatma Hastaoğlu addressed the consequences of abuse and neglect in elder care.  Dr. Hatice Oğuz Özgür emphasized the importance of the problem of digital violence that negatively affects the elderly, and Dr. Aslı Gözde Akış evaluated the consequences of elder abuse and neglect and intervention methods. Dr. İbrahim Kaygusuz addressed the issue of elder abuse and neglect at the country level and discussed the practices countries have implemented to address the issue.

The symposium was an important organization to make progress in preventing elder abuse and neglect.
