Health-Focused Education from Physiotherapy Students to the Department of Architecture
A special interdisciplinary event held on May 27–28, 2025 brought together students from the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and the Faculty of Architecture. The aim of the event was to raise awareness among future architects about occupational health risks they may encounter in design studios and construction sites.
This event was organized as part of the course "Social Responsibility and Community Engagement," taught by Dr. Merve Karapınar.
During the session, the physical challenges associated with the architectural profession were examined in detail. Particular emphasis was placed on postural disorders that may arise due to long hours spent at drafting tables, intensive model-making activities, and on-site visits. Architecture students had the opportunity to learn about preventive approaches for common musculoskeletal issues such as cervical straightening, carpal tunnel syndrome, and lower back pain.
In addition to theoretical information, physiotherapy students incorporated practical applications. Through interactive participation, exercises were performed on topics such as proper sitting posture while drawing, the importance of regular breaks, and wrist-hand exercises. Students also had the chance to practice simple stretching techniques that can be applied during studio work.
At the conclusion of the event, students from both departments expressed a shared interest in organizing similar interdisciplinary activities on a regular basis.
