May 5th World Midwives Day was celebrated

Süleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery organized a celebration program within the scope of "May 5th World Midwives Day".

Academic staff and students attended the program, held in the backyard of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The program addressed the vital role of midwifery in healthcare and professional solidarity. The critical role midwives play, particularly in protecting maternal and infant health, was emphasized.

The opening speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ferdi Başkurt, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Başkurt said, “Midwifery is a difficult and demanding profession. Reaching mothers in need in remote, hard-to-reach corners and villages of the country is a necessity for the profession. The fact that it is a profession that constantly improves itself scientifically and practically makes it even more meaningful and important for you, our students. On this occasion, I wish you all a happy Midwives Day on May 5th.”

Midwifery Department Chair Prof. Dr. Şükran Özkahraman Koç addressed the students, saying, “Being a woman and touching a woman is incredibly valuable. Before, during, and after birth, a mother always wants to see and feel the midwife. Making risky decisions and acting quickly when necessary is a necessity in your profession. Therefore, it highlights the importance of midwifery. Midwifery has been around since the dawn of humanity. Therefore, it is so precious and important. You are so precious to us. I wish all our students a happy Midwife Day on May 5th and wish them success.”

At the end of the program, Dean Prof. Dr. Başkurt noted that there are many indicators of a country's level of development, such as the birth rate, maternal mortality rate, and infant mortality rate. He therefore emphasized the importance of the midwifery profession to a country and wished the students success in their careers.
